We spoke to our colleagues at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai and here we have Mr Ian Jeffrey, Chief Steward in the hotel. With many years of experience in the industry, here’s some valuable advice he has for younger hospitality professionals who are at the early stages of their career!
Why Hotels and how did you start?
I started my career as a housekeeping attendant then moved to Kitchen Steward in one of the hotels here in Dubai. I started to see that hospitality is a very interesting industry where you meet and interact with a lot of people. It is also a place where you will be able to work with different cultures and people with different talents and expertise.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Hospitality is not a job, it’s a passion to serve your guest. The most enjoyable thing about my work is to see each and every guest in the hotel happy and relaxed. I do believe that each and every colleague has a big role in ensuring that our guests have a wonderful stay.
What will you be focusing on mainly in the next few months?
I will be focusing in building a good collaboration within the team and implementing new ideas to ensure that we meet our goals on a daily basis.

What are your hobbies and what do you like to do on your days off?
Watching movies, driving around and travelling to different places.
Any words of wisdom regarding career that you can pass to our colleagues?
It doesn’t matter where you are coming from, all that matters is where you are going. Dedication and hard work is the key to success. Keep your eyes on your goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it.
